Chewing gum in the urinal
I’m offended when people do stupid things for no reason. People can do stupid things for stupid reasons, and that’s bothersome. People can do good things for stupid reasons, and that’s fine. But I can’t stand the stupid things-no reason combination.
About 10 o’clock or so each weekday morn, I stroll over to the john to take care of the morning’s coffee. Without fail, each morning I find at least one, sometimes more than one piece of used chewing gum staring back at me from the urinal mat. Why, I ask myself each morning, am I looking at piece of chewing gum? Is the spitter of the chewing gum unaware that:
- a trash can stands a scant 10 feet away, directly adjacent to the sink he’s (hopefully) about to use to wash his hands, and
- some poor guy has to pick that gum out of urinal!
And I guess that’s the problem: there’s no reason to discard chewing gum in the urinal, but for a person to realize there’s no reason, he has to think to think. And that’s where the real problem is. I find it depressing.

There’s the chance that it is unintentional. Some of your co-workers may be literally too stupid to piss and chew gum at the same time. They start peeing and the gum just falls out of their mouth.
Of course this would also imply that they are too stupid to notice the trend of always losing their gum and therefore too unintelligent to dispose of it properly beforehand.

Hey, at least this person isn’t disposing of theirs boogers on the wall by the urinal. Yes. The 14th floor of the Tribune Tower had that problem for about a year. We never discovered who was doing it. Thankfully, it stopped.

Who chews gum in the morning anyway? Why not tape a little box next to the urinal(s) and label it “You know it takes 27 years for a urinal to digest one wad of chewing gum? Don’t be an asshole, spit your nicorette into this box.”

Or maybe did you think that perhaps there’s a causual relationship there. As in, the act of urinating (unsanitary act) while chomping on something in your mouth (sanitary act) causes the chewer to
a) feel nauseated by having both going on at the same time, and
b) feel the immediate need to lose the gum
This still doesn’t resolve the issue of them not realizing this happens and spitting out in advance…
