I actually pitched this as a news story when I worked as a producer for FOX. It worked in 2003, and probably still works now. We were going to send in pre-teens to prove the point. Trouble is, TV needs pictures… and Jewel knew enough — probably from Sam Donaldson and Food Lion — to prohibit hidden cameras with a prominent notice on the front door.

Yes, I’m thinking that the swipe–which interfaces with the external card readers–switches the self checkout software automatically into payment mode. We’ll see.

So you mean it works if you swipe your credit card regardless of the fact that the select payment type screen doesn’t come up before you do it? I’ve never tried that. I’m not underage, but it could come in handy those times when the clerk is nowhere to be found. It’s either wait around for them at self-checkout, or wait in a long line at a regular aisle, only to find out that the cashier isn’t 21. They need to mark the alcohol friendly aisle. Especially near closing.

I do notice that a lot of the time if they’re busy the self-checkout clerk won’t bother to check ID, and will just approve it anyway. So either way, this could work for the kids…
