My name: The good and the bad

My name is Tom.

Good things about the name Tom:

  • Short and sweet.
  • Easy to pronounce, regardless of the speaker’s native tongue.
  • Easy to spell, and even foreigners spell it right. (Thom Yorke, you’re wrong.)
  • Even though people think it’s a common name and use it as a placeholder name for the typical guy (“Tom, Dick, and Harry”), it’s not actually that common.
  • Three solid variants: Tom, Tommy, and Thomas. More than you can say for, well, Richard.

Bad things about the name Tom:

  • Sounds a lot like “mom,” which is a tad bothersome in public places.
  • I share a name with this dickface.

If you’re feeling self-important as well — and really, what blogger isn’t? — replicate this concept on your blog and send me a trackback.

Well, at least your name is not part of a very well known popular movie quote…

With a name like Luke, I found out that just about every every I meet will at some point in time inform me that he/she is my father…

Good things about “Evan.” (Maybe Evan of OrangeYeti can add to this.)

    1. Short, simple.
    2. Uncommon.
    3. Sounds good spoken in any language.

    Bad things:

    1. Hard to spell for many people.
    2. Hard to pronounce for many people during cold reads.
    3. Can be made fun of easily.
