Bananas are so average
Have you ever had a really fantastic banana? Have you ever remarked, “wow, that was a scrumptious banana?” Because I haven’t, and I’m convinced it’s the most boring fruit going. It’s truly the Todd Zeile of the fruit world.
Actually, most bananas I’ve had are decidedly mediocre, but a “good” one rises to an agreeable state of averageness, so I’ll grant it that.
Are fresh, I-live-on-an-island-and-just-picked-this bananas a lot better? I’m sure banana snobs (there’s a “snob” for everything, mind you) will say yes, but I’ve really got to wonder about the taste potential of this food. It’s just not doing it for me.
Oh, and cue off-color jokes.

There is a rumor, one that I have no proof is true, that female students at Bob Jones University are required to eat a banana with a fork and knife.

I think bannanas are one of the all-time greatest fruits! But you have to eat them when they are perfect, and that is when they have spots on the peel. The growers ship them green, and most people eat them when they are simply pure yellow. Wait a couple of days, and don’t mind the occasional “mushy” spot. What other fruit is “pure fruit”. You pull the zipper peel off, and you are left with 100% fruit, unlike other fruits which have cores, seeds, pits, skin, etc. It’s like eating a lobster tail that has been peeled out of the shell.
PS. Tom, this post went in as YOU (from MY computer). I edited it. Hmmmmm….that means I can fool with all kinds of stuff!

It’s a glass half full or half empty scenario. All bananas are ok. OR All bananas are super!
btw, the 5-letter word i have to type from that images is “BREAD” is it telling me to eat a banana sandwich?

Bananas are not fruits. They are herbs by biological standards. They are only fruits by physical apperance (growing on trees, have seeds, etc).
This is probably why they aren’t delicious like fruits. :P

Todd Zeile as the most boring player is the PERFECT analogy…brilliant!

Bananas are good and easy. No work to open (unlike orange) and can just be thrown in to a backpack w/o washing (unlike apple). Good in cereal.

Good in cereal, true. I’m with you there. But I submit that blueberries and raspberries are a superior cereal fruit (albeit abotu 10x more expensive).
As for “convenient” fruits — I like the pear. High percentage of fruit vs. core as well as backpack-storable.

If you’re living in a non-tropical climate you’re always going to be eating bananas that were picked green. Same goes for any tropical fruit and local softer fruits like peaches. So they’re not going to taste the same as they would if they were picked ripe. That also goes for any fruit.
But I agree, bananas are pretty average. I also think apples are very average for the most part. It’s a shame that these two average fruits are more popular than other, more deserving fruits. It helps that they’re cheap and are decent quality year-round, I guess.

I’m kinda with you as far as bananas go. I’d much rather have berries in my cereal. HOWEVER, there is something absurdly beautiful about blackened, over-ripe bananas. Ok, I’m just joking about that, but banana bread is delicious! So are fried bananas! Personally, I’m all about the rhubarb (but is it a fruit or vegetable?) I think it’s a vegetable (like celery) and blah, blah, blah

Bananas are the most consumed fruit worldwide. Research is being made to put vaccines into bananas… no more needles! And… you can do this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/purewanderlust/101970163/
