I am not an “IT guy”
I’m not easy to offend, and I guess I’m not really “offended” by this, but few things annoy me more than being called an “IT guy.” I am not an IT guy.
Most of what I do has nothing to do with technology; it has everything to do with communication. I talk to Sales, Business, and other parties and translate their requirements into the language and specifications of Technology. After that, I help to manage the development and testing. The technology is almost incidental. And sometimes the projects have almost nothing to do with technology. (Just because it involves computers or the Internet doesn’t mean it’s truly a technology project.)
But some people consider anyone in Technology to be an “IT guy” (curiously, “IT girl” is not as popular — imagine that). They figure, “Well, those guys know about technology, and I know nothing about technology, so I’ll just throw them in the ‘IT’ category.” This is the insulting part. I don’t call people in Finance “numbers guys.” I don’t call people in sales “phone call guys.” I don’t call people in business “bullshit guys.”
Okay, so that last one was kind of a low blow.
Seriously, I don’t even like the abbreviation “IT.” I much prefer “Technology,” for whatever reason.

At least people give great respect people they term “IT guys.” You have a knowledge far above what they know–hence them grouping anyone dealing with technology/internet into one group.
Now graphic designers–we are the people who play with crayons all day.

Be careful, though, because IT guys make a ton of money (or at least in Singapore they do). Do you make a ton of money? Hell, maybe you do, but I’m just saying.
You wouldn’t want people coming to you about money when you don’t actually have it…
