My AdSense revenue is down
What do you do when your AdSense revenues plummet?
I don’t know. I gotta figure it out. I’ve looked at a lot of stats and don’t see huge changes in my traffic, but I do see a lot fewer impressions served. That leads me to believe that perhaps AdSense is running out of inventory for my site.
I’ve got the ad units set to fill with a solid color when no ads are available, but I’m going to change that. I’ll be trying Alternate URL Ads and seeing what that does for me.
In the meantime, this blows.

Well, let’s take a look at your more recent blog entries. Notice that you’ve been spending a lot of time talking about AdSense itself. Would AdSense set up ads for AdSense? I doubt it.
I haven’t noticed any ads around here for awhile.
The entries from days ago have more company names and keywords that have relevance to companies likely to have websites with AdSense. Your recent entries have been things like “Superman,” “Walter-Candy,” and “whistling.” None of these sound like ad material.
Your entries lack AdSense content, and come to think of it, I haven’t seen an ad on this blog for over a week, maybe longer.

Yeah. In other words, the revenue is down because your blog has been better.

Well, I sometimes specifically exclude ads from pages. I can control that in my (hacked up) Movable Type.
It’s true that my recent stuff is not particularly AdSense-friendly, but most AdSense revenue is made because of search results, and search engines don’t index things for a few days. “Prime time” for a blog entry in the SE’s is about 1 week to a few months after it’s been posted, in my experience.

Maybe you should rant about celebrities some more, or maybe even advertise your blog on some forums.
But I’ll agree with my name counterpart. The entries that are geared toward life in general are better. This is probably because there are many sites on the internet which rant about organizations, but it’s harder to fnid the blogs that point out the stranger and more cynical details, which is what your blog does best.
It’s enticing me to create a Word Press account so I’ll have a blog that doesn’t pay attention to my personal life so much. And no, my personal blog isn’t emo like stereotypical ones. My friends give me credit for content. Just thought I’d clear that up. :P

In other words, spend less time posting about how unhappy you are about your ad rates, and more time posting interesting content people want to read.

Evan/Klilx/Jeff: Well, point taken. But (a) making money is addictive, and (b) some people like reading about making money (e.g. me). But, yeah, point taken.

tom, I recently found your post regarding Alternate URL Ads and wanted to stop by and see your integration — but I was unable to find any running on your website? any pointers where to look?

Alternate URL Ads: I’ve got http://underscorebleach.net/altad/main/largerect.html set as my alternate_ad_url — am I doing it incorrectly?

Tom,
Totally my bad man I was checking the wrong page. I realized this after reading a few more of your posts/associated comments and saw your ad block.
Your AUA integration is 100% correct.

I don’t put ads on every page. If the entry is really short or I want to keep it “pure” or I know it’ll never get good ads, I disable ads on the page.

The customer service at Nordstrom is great, but the sales people can be sharks… especially the shoe department. From a guys perspective being with my wife at the make up department, the girls are always busy! They should just hold paint pallets for as much make up goes on.. Guys don’t like that much make up!
