If you have a critical problem that has no apparent solution. Writing it all down in an email is very stressfull and time-consuming. If shit is hitting the fan and time is of the essence, a phone call is much more satisfying.

I’ve never tried to call them; I’d rather e-mail someone. This blogger says they have decent phone support (called her back on a Sunday). This is callback, though, not live phone support. They do have live chat support.

Personally, I hate talking to people on the phone for tech support. Usually I know more than they do about my problem, but it can often be hard to describe. I’d rather get it all down in e-mail. That way, if the person reading my email doesn’t know what I’m talking about, they can pass it on to someone who does instead of babying me with the standard triage of questions for 5 minutes.

In my experience, most host offer pretty much the same thing, for pretty much the same price. I agree that DreamHost price is better than most and their rewards program has helped them get some great pub in the dork community. However, the one thing that really matters to me for a host is support.

Does DreamHost answer the phone when you call? I’m willing to pay a couple bucks more a month ($50 buck more a month in fact for dedicated plans) if I know my host will answer the phone and be able to do someting after they answer the phone.
