Why DreamHost is great (for non-techies!)

I love DreamHost. Seriously. My website stays up. I never run out of bandwidth. It’s fast. I’ve got more than enough disk space. The support folks are responsive. I can do whatever I need to do on their servers. Whenever I have a hankerin’ for a new feature, I take a look around the support forums or the knowledge base, and guess what? 95% chance it’s already been done. DreamHost makes it easy.

Probably the #1 thing I like about DreamHost is their style. The support folks are friendly and the newsletters are funny. I normally hate e-mail newsletters, but I look forward to reading DreamHost’s. Bottom line: I enjoy being hosted by DreamHost. It’s that simple. Get to know them a bit at the DreamHost blog.

Why DreamHost is great (for techies!)

Okay, onwards to the technobabble.

These guys have just about everything installed you could ever want. To wit:

  • A minimum of 120GB of monthly bandwidth for the lowest-level plan—and they increase it for every month you stay with them!
  • A minimum of 2.4 GB of disk space for the lowest-level plan.
  • Snapshot, which is an awesome feature I’m continually saved by. It transparently backs up all your files.
  • They’ve probably got that Perl module, so you won’t have to ask for it.
  • SpamAssassin
  • Full cron control
  • Ruby on Rails
  • CVS
  • PHP5
  • FastCGI

And a whole host of other features that I can’t begin to cover here. Check out the full list at the DreamHost plan comparison.

So, in conclusion!

Sign up! $90 off? Who can resist?! It’s great stuff. Tell your friends, it’s the coooolest: DEAL90

Oh, if you’re wondering, “What’s in it for this guy?”, I should let you know that I will make a little bit of money if you use this code. It’s actually pretty minimal—about enough to buy a cheap lunch—and your $90 comes directly out of my award amount. Another way to put it is that DreamHost referrals are a zero-sum game. In the end, I think it’s a pretty fair deal.

In my experience, most host offer pretty much the same thing, for pretty much the same price. I agree that DreamHost price is better than most and their rewards program has helped them get some great pub in the dork community. However, the one thing that really matters to me for a host is support.

Does DreamHost answer the phone when you call? I’m willing to pay a couple bucks more a month ($50 buck more a month in fact for dedicated plans) if I know my host will answer the phone and be able to do someting after they answer the phone.

I’ve never tried to call them; I’d rather e-mail someone. This blogger says they have decent phone support (called her back on a Sunday). This is callback, though, not live phone support. They do have live chat support.

Personally, I hate talking to people on the phone for tech support. Usually I know more than they do about my problem, but it can often be hard to describe. I’d rather get it all down in e-mail. That way, if the person reading my email doesn’t know what I’m talking about, they can pass it on to someone who does instead of babying me with the standard triage of questions for 5 minutes.

If you have a critical problem that has no apparent solution. Writing it all down in an email is very stressfull and time-consuming. If shit is hitting the fan and time is of the essence, a phone call is much more satisfying.
