If you’re a fan of Paul Krugman…

…consider what the man was predicting in 1998:

  • The growth of the Internet will slow drastically, as the flaw in “Metcalfe’s law”–which states that the number of potential connections in a network is proportional to the square of the number of participants–becomes apparent: most people have nothing to say to each other! By 2005 or so, it will become clear that the Internet’s impact on the economy has been no greater than the fax machine’s.
  • As the rate of technological change in computing slows, the number of jobs for IT specialists will decelerate, then actually turn down; ten years from now, the phrase information economy will sound silly.

Whew! Good thing I’m still riding the tail end of that dying “information economy” thing. Fallback plan: roofin’!

p.s. Metcalfe? Who dat?

Spizzay ridin’ in real-time niznow

Revisiting Gizoogle, I’m really liking what it has to say about my recent problems with TrackBack spam (”spizzay”).

Over tha pizzast few days, I’ve gotten hit wit a couple of nasty TrackBack spams . Chill as I take you on a trip. It’s not steppin’ (yet), but I thizzay tha rappa is up ta sum-m sum-m new. … I can’t be sure wizzy but mah guess is that they’re ridin’ in real-time niznow, or close ta it. Once they identify a list of blogs ta target, they straight trippin’ program can gizzy tha TrackBack URL fizzy tha RDF metadata. As a result, mah technique of chang’n tha random drug deala in tha TrackBack URL is rendered ineffective.

Talk Digger answers “Who’s linking to me?”

I have to say, Fred Giasson is kinda quickly making a name for himself here. His new service Talk Digger is quite useful. If you’re a blogger, give it a shot.

This meta search tool queries multiple sites to give you a bird’s eye view of who’s linking to you and how the linking activity is trending. Fred talks more about the thinking behind this meta tool on his own blog.

New wave of TrackBack spam

Over the past few days, I’ve gotten hit with a couple of nasty TrackBack spams. It’s not overwhelming (yet), but I think the spammers are up to something new.

True Geek test

Since a previous entry on my level of nerdiness was quite successful, I decided try to follow in Jack’s footsteps (again) and take another of these online quizzes. I think this test is better than the previous one.

Survey: Xanga vs. LiveJournal

According to research by undergrad psych student Hat Nim Choi of Haverford, Xanga is full of Asians and LiveJournal is full of whites. Xanga users averaged about 18, LJ about 20. Accounting for the trusty Internet Lying Factor™, I’ll venture LiveJournal is demographically similar to a Wisconsin middle school, while Xanga is more like a San Francisco elementary school.

Out of the whole report, you have to admit this graphic is pretty hilarious.

Radio Paradise donation

Radio Paradise donationI regularly enjoy Radio Paradise. Bar none, it’s the best Internet radio station around.

And the way I look at it, the pleasure RP has given me over the past months adds up to the price of a cheap CD. When they asked for $10, it just seemed right to oblige and pay up.

I recommend Radio Paradise if you like a solid variety of rock and alternative music. Nothing too soft or too hard, a little bit of mainstream, a little bit on the periphery, and some unknown flavors. It’s excellent!
