Gwen Stefani’s Asian persuasion
Has anyone noticed Gwen Stefani’s Asian persuasion? Take a look, for instance, at the “Hollaback Girl” video. The chick is obsessed with… Asian chicks. It’s like her trademark. There’s P. Diddy’s awful fur coats, Pharrell’s 5 year-old girl voice, Courtney’s Love’s heroin, and Gwen Stefani’s band of Asian followers. Every performer’s got to have a trademark.
My guess at a reason for Gwen’s obsession? The never-die Western fascination with the mysterious quality of the “other.” (As an anthro major, I can write that without sounding tooo much like a hoser.) Personally, I think the Japanese, what with their adult cartoon porn and super-happy-face/high-suicide-rate culture, are flat-out weird. Call me a xenophobic dickhead.

I have no idea why Stefani has had this obsession but my guess is that she really is interested in the Japanese Harajuku culture that has become quite a sight in Japan even to the Japanese (it is by no chance a common thing, in fact, only in Harajuku as the culture has been named after and displayed by a minority of otakus). And yes it definitely shows Stefani’s uniqueness! I do agree that certain aspects of Japanese culture are strange, but I must disagree that we can just stereotype a culture like that. And I am Asian lol so I want to say that I do like blonde hair etc. but it is just a trend. Personally, I’m not doing it because I want to copy the Caucasian look but rather I just think I look better with light colored hair. =x Ok, I really totally lost my train of thought on what I wanted to say. Lol, peaaaace guys. Oh oh =p have you noticed that Japanese people always make the peace sign in photos too?
