Jack, I’m sorry: Why my RSS feed has annoying updates
A couple of weeks ago, Jack Vinson e-mailed me to ask why his newsreader showed “updated” items for my RSS feed that didn’t seem to be updated in any way. The answer: Because I can’t leave well enough alone and because Movable Type doesn’t cope well with my neurosis.
I might post something about Bruce Pearl and obsessively update it as new information and comments come in. I might try to gwn “web design greenville sc” and continually tweak the entry. Or I might be anal-retentive and notice a spelling error which simply can’t be left unfixed.
All of these minor changes cause a change in the blog entry, causing your newsreader to flag the content as new, causing you to be annoyed, causing me to write this lament.
Let me say: I wish it were not so. Jack, I’m sorry.

One option is to tell your aggregator that you don’t want to see changes, if you have that option. NewsGator provides the option to “treat modified posts as new.” I have that on by default, so I can see if someone makes a major change to their posts. But in the case of someone like Mr _Bleach, I need to turn off that setting and live with a few misspellings.

Matt (spudart),
That’s a pretty corny joke, but it’s pretty funny too.
