Back from Europe

I’m alive! I’m back from Euroland. And I brought photos and gummi bears!

It’s strange; after writing in a journal during my trip and doing a lot of thinking, I don’t have the energy to analyze or write about it in retrospect now. I suppose I’ll just leave that aside and blog it when the desire hits me. For now, check out the photos, which do tell one side of the story. I’ll be around in a bit to tell the other.

Blog search: Technorati vs. Blogdigger

Blog search engines don’t seem to be yet up to the level of general Internet search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Still, you need a blog-specific search engine to navigate the waters, due simply to the fast slew rate of the blogosphere, and the old-fashioned search engines are several steps too slow in indexing. Therefore, I recommend Technorati and Blogdigger. I’d only used the former a few times, but after reading JD’s post Technorati vs. Blogdigger, I’ll be using Blogdigger for keyword searches and Technorati for link tracking.

If you’re inclined to tool around with the wide world of blog tools out there, 90% of which are useless, scoot over to Ari Paparo’s Big List of International Blog Search Engines.

And if you have any personal recommendation in this area, which seems to be a place for lots of development and few hard-and-fast rules, do share here.

The Huffington Report Post

The Huffington Report, er, The Huffington Post, isn’t trying to be the Drudge Report. Right? I mean, that’s why the wrong name (The Huffington Report) redirects to http://www.thehuffingtonpost.com. Arianna’s not worried in the least about Matt Drudge’s piddly ten year head start! Hers is a whole new concept, baby!

Jim Lampley and The Huffington Post

Haven’t been keeping up with online politics? You haven’t missed much. Arianna Huffington launched her would-be Drudge Report, entitled The Huffington Post, to much fanfare. I went to the site and was pissed that they don’t even list archives by author. Then I found Jim Lampley and laughed my ass off.

Am I a skinny version of Artie Lange?

If Artie Lange lost about 75 lbs., would he look like me?

Or, restated, if I were fatter, funnier, and didn’t want to teabag Howard Stern, would I look like him?

I’m sorta asking this seriously!

p.s. When I’ve got a 5 o’clock shadow (after two days), I still look like Russell Crowe. Don’t playa hate.

p.p.s. I forgot that fully 15% of my seven regular readers don’t know me in real life. This is the self picture I typically use on the Intarweb. Compare it to the picture Artie Lange typically uses.

Firefox security flaws: More common, more serious

A couple of months ago, I mentioned complacency in the Mozilla Firefox user base over security exploits. My fears were well-founded. Since the post on Feburary 28th, several serious security flaws have been uncovered in the browser, requiring the release of Firefox 1.0.1, 1.0.2, and 1.0.3.

Now, with today’s report of the most serious bug yet, version 1.0.4 will be out soon enough. (In the meantime, the Foundation has recommended that we disable Javascript. Sorry, that’s not exactly practical advice.) The updates are coming more quickly. The bugs are more serious. Mozilla is not a panacea.

Dee Brown: Don’t enter the NBA Draft

Dee BrownDee Brown, here’s a heartfelt plea from a lifelong Illini fan: Don’t enter the NBA draft.

Dee Brown has thrown his name into the the lot of the NBA draft but kept the back door open by not hiring an agent. That was prudent. Now it’s time for him to reevaluate his stance that going in the second round is fine. This was a surprise to me and to Mark Tupper because it’s an injudicious stance which seems out of character. Dee Brown can be a solid first-rounder, but he still needs to prove that his game will work in the big league. He needs to return to Illinois for his senior season.
