Tom’s sore throat remedy
I’m home sick from work today, which sucks. I enjoy living alone and being independent, but sometimes you realize that life alone has disadvantages too. That certainly becomes apparent when you’re sick.
Anyway, I’ve got a nasty sore throat again, similar to a terrible sore throat I had a few months ago. I figured out a good home remedy for sore throats then when Chloraseptic and saltwater rinses were largely ineffective. Here’s my recipe for sore throat relief:
- Make some lemon tea, preferably Lipton caffeine free herbal tea. I like it’s because it’s cheap and has zing. Let the tea steep longer than usual. We’re making a potion here, not regular tea.
- Add a lot of lemon juice. This is what gives your throat relief, so don’t shirk on it, even if it makes the tea taste bad. If you have a bottle of lemon juice, add three capfuls.
- Add enough honey to balance the lemon juice and make it drinkable (maybe a tablespoon). This also helps soothe the throat.
If you’ve got any remedies to add, or tweaks to mine, feel free to add them here.

Cayenne pepper Add 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to 1 cup of boiling water; stir well and gargle while mixture is very warm. This brings more circulation to the area and helps draw away the infection. To this formula you can add 4 parts echinacea, 1 part garlic bulb, and 2 parts peppermint leaves to 1 part cayenne.
Or another remedy is to add 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to 1 cup of boiling water; stir well and sip slowly.

I am struggling to get through the day at work today, I think I have the same thing Tom said that he had it a few months ago, so did I. Unusually painful sore throat, ouch! Anyhow, my mother suggests gargeling with peroxide. I know it sounds gross, burns and tastes bad too, but it kills the germs!

I just want to note the pattern of all home sore throat remedies burning really bad when you do them. I wrote an article on my blog about it and included a trackback.
