Google’s take on AutoComplete: Google Suggest
Following Yahoo! Mail’s recently implemented AutoComplete feature, Google has introduced a neat new item called Google Suggest. In real-time, it automatically suggests phrases that match the characters you’ve already typed into the search input field. Also included are the approximate number of hits associated with each phrase. More information about the feature is available from the Google software engineer who designed it.
IrishEyes introduces us to the “Google alphabet,” as determined by Google Suggest, and we find that it runs A to Z from Amazon to Zip Codes. Stefano Demiliani mentions that Google’s got some sort of filter at work here, since “sex” won’t get you anywhere. (Maybe Google Suggest needs a nice dose of Levitra to AutoComplete?)
Here’s how it works for moi today:
- typed: “t”
- returned: tara reid
- typed: “to”
- returned: toys r us
- typed: “tom”
- returned: toms hardware
- typed: “tom “
- returned: tom cruise
- typed: “tom s”
- returned: tom sawyer
- typed: “tom sh”
- returned: tom sharpe
- typed: “tom she”
- returned: tom shea (”tom sherman” #3)
- typed: “tom sher”
- returned: tom sherman (uh, finally!)
UPDATE 12/14/04: Via Mike Fioritto, here’s a fuller list of the words on Google’s naughty list (and some that slipped through the cracks). Prudes, no clicking!
