Voting on principle

Corny though it may sound, I felt genuinely inspired to step inside that middle school library this morning and wait in line to vote. I looked around me and saw an interesting cross-section of people, complete with strange people from my apartment building, and the real power of democracy in action hit me. That I live in Illinois, and in a wildly Democratic area to boot, only reinforced that these people were here for the pure principle, not because their vote had much of a chance of swinging any race—even the race for county water district commissioner.

Voting is a genuinely inspiring act. Let’s leave it at that, and let’s leave the marketing and the media circus in the dumpster.

UPDATE 11/4/04: Spotted a neat post from chicago.metblogs.com that lists 110 Chicago-related blog posts on voting. I’m linked. ;)
