Bryn Athyn summer 2004

I did it. Went in without expectations. I’m so tired of people telling me, “The key to enjoying [fill-in-the-blank] is to go in without expectations.” Well, no shit. But I went into my trip to B.A. without expectations—primarily because I was distracted by L.A. stuff—and it worked like a charm.

I’m well pleased that Bryn Athyn seems firmly on the track to Normalcy. People are eating more and more like Normal Americans, which gives me great satisfaction. The no-sugar, no-lactose, no-gluten, no-red meat, no-animal products, and no-processed foods diets seem distinctly out of vogue. Moreover, most (but not all) of the females seem to have stumbled onto the path of Pragmatism (or at least heard about it from a friend). This also pleases me greatly.

I soaked in a lot of ideas in my few days in B.A. I did a lot of listening, a lot of absorbing. I asked a few questions to a few people and got a lot of different theories and thoughts. It was fascinating, illuminating, and enlivening. It was very helpful. And it wasn’t a ready-made answer, but I wouldn’t want that anyhow. I need the raw materials, but I have to put together the finished product. I should be able to come up with something respectable now.

My souvenir for the trip was a pair of horribly sunburned knees. I very much enjoyed my time with Erin and her family in the Poconos, and red, leathery knees were a small price to pay for the interior peace from the lake and the forest. I know I’m not meant to live in a city my entire life; I’ll need at least periodic breaths of fresh air from holdouts of nature. So I got my breath back, and I’m feeling refreshed.

Right, yes. All in all, refreshed.
