Stop the pig genocide!
PETA, the venerable guardians of animal dignity, have made me aware of a very disturbing situation. It seems that a few cads at some high school in Pennsylvania are going to have a pig roast. Now I’ve heard stories of insensitive and ridiculous behavior at small high schools in America, but this just about takes the cake. A pig roast? Eating pork? This is an absolute travesty.
Luckily, PETA is on top of the situation and is prepared to stop the pig genocide:
On May 16, The Academy of the New Church, a private Christian school in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania, plans to host a pig roast as part of its year-end festivities—despite the fact that pigs on factory farms endure lives of pain and suffering before being subjected to horrible, inhumane deaths. …
Although pigs are naturally peaceful and social animals, they resort to fighting and tail-biting when they are packed into crowded pens, and they develop neurotic behaviors when they are confined and kept in isolation. …
Please call or e-mail school officials to let them know that pigs are intelligent, sentient beings who value their lives and that they should no more be exploited for food and “fun” than the family dog or cat.
Pigs are just like humans: put them too close together and they bite each other. The similarities are really quite startling. And yet do we roast humans and eat them? Do we, I ask you? (Note: please exclude certain areas of Africa when answering this rhetorical question.) Nay, we do not roast and eat humans.
Anyone with a shred of sensitivity and class knows that humanity’s days of roasting animals to eat their flesh are past!—long gone!—finito! Let’s put this shameful practice behind us and follow the lead of the Belgians. You can help in the effort by encouraging the Academy of the New Church to stop the pig roast and start the sensitivity training.
If you’d like to join in this effort, here are some sample letters from some of my concerned friends. Follow their lead and protect the dignity of the beautiful, intelligent, and dignified pigs in this world.
Dear Peta,
I was ecstatic when I recieved the link to your site about the “Pig Roast” at the Academy of the New Church. To me, it seems outlandish and heathen to center an event around the death of such a smart animal. At the least they could have picked an animal that is not as “transient” [sic] as a pig, such as a cow or a chicken.
I mean, if they’re going to have a roast, why not roast a dumb animal–it’s more humane that way!
But do you want to know what really fries my bacon (so to speak)? Did you know they kill more than just one pig every year to feed the students at the dining hall. In fact, I would go so far as to say they kill 10! We need to defend those 10 pigs as well.
Hopefully, if we dedicate sufficient time, money and energy to our cause, we can rescue the life of that one pig that will suffer at the “Pig Roast.” Maybe we can even take on the rescue of those other 10 pigs.
Even though they aren’t roasted at the dining hall, they are fried and sauteed, and frankly I am not willing to let this slide. The way I see it, if we save one, we might as well save’em all. Being as smart and “transient” [sic] as they are, those other 10 from the dining hall might get jealous.

Dear PETA,
Thank you for standing up for the morals that so many of us have truly accepted and believe. How can people who consider themselves Christian commit such terrible acts or cruelty to an animal as intelligent as a pig? I’m glad there is an organization out there willing to tackle these big issues.
However, I’m concerned that what you’re doing falls short of the ideal. I have researched the Academy of the New Church and I became aware that they also serve pork products in their dining hall at other meals. This is a travesty that must not stand! Just because a pig roast is advertised as a ‘fun’ event, that doesn’t make it more important to protest than the drab everyday meals that involve cooked pig. How can PETA protest the eating of pork sometimes and rest on its haunches at others, as poor pigs are brutalized.
May I propose that a full out attack on every dining hall system that supports the dehumanizing and abusing of intelligent beings? If eating pork is wrong, and it is, we must not allow it to continue. I call to arms every truly enlightened human to fight in this war against the genocide of pigs. Let’s not stop at the Academy of the New Church.
How can we live in such a contradictory nation? When a few humans get killed Bush will spend billions to prevent further attacks on American soil, yet he lets the murder of millions squeak by right under his pallat every year? Doesn’t he see that pigs can feel too!? Terrorism is terrorism!
Thank you again for being the organization that champions my needs.
Respectfully,
Kevin

Dear PETA,
Pig Roasts rock, hardcore. Pig is a delicious animal, much like chicken and cow. I say you leave the nice people of Bryn Athen alone and let them enjoy their roast.

LOL…
If this isn’t a joke, (and my conscience will never rest if it is), let it be known that things kill each other. Always have, since the beginning of our evolution. To deprive the world of meat is the greater travesty.
How many bugs did you kill today? Nazi.

We’re having a pig roast this month for our daughter’s b-day. Gotta teach the young ones how to properly roast a pig! Somebody quick, call Pres. Bush and inform him of my terrorism!

If we were into “Pig Genocide” then wouldn’t we stop the raising of pigs? Genocide is planned extermination, and as far as I can tell, pigs are NOT in short supply!
Uneducated people crack me up. In the letter above we are “dehumanizing” pigs. Too late, Chirstian man, the good Lord already did that! They’re not human! My Lord put pigs here for us because they are DELICIOUS!
Please, oh enlightened beings, please realize that animals and humans are DIFFERENT. Any organizm that is not human is….well….NOT HUMAN. Sheesh.
All of you need a different hobby. Maybe take a cooking class at your local community college? Maybe rake leaves for neighbors for free?
You people make me sick.

This is downright hilarious. I go to ANC, but unfortunately did not make it to the pig roast this year, but I will say that pig is one of my favorite meats. If we want to bring God into this, I believe he put everything on this planet to serve a use, and one of the many uses a pig might serve, being eaten is one of them.

Some meaty food for thought: I too am proud to attend the Academy of the New Church. I find it disturbing and sad that you feel the need to research my school’s dining habits. We serve pork on occasion at our dining hall. So do millions of other schools. Why pick on us? You call “researching” us looking at our menus? Pitiful. I am truly sorry that you waste your time on things like this. The pig roast is a completely innocent event. It’s fun, relaxed and yummy. Do you think we chase the pig around our campus after blinding it, throwing rocks and pitchforks? Honestly, why worry about us? Don’t you have some professional butchers to go nag? I think there are far bigger issues in this world besides a few students eating pork. I agree with Ben, God put as all here for a reason. If you want to think of all of us as animals, why not persecute lions for killing antelope? Or cats for killing mice? If humans are animals too why can’t we kill other animals for food?

If we’re not supposed to eat animals then why are they made out of meat?

Killing pigs is simply inhumane, and I would never do it.
I must confess, however, that the squealing they do when I eat them alive does take some getting used to.

You’re all nuts! Have you ever tasted pig? ITS AWESOME!! Ever read Genesis? Its all there for us to consume and use, animals, plants and herbs, who are you to deny that? Inhumane? Its human nature to eat animals, or whatever we have to do to survive. Now, Survival is not the name of the game here, but at the end of the day its still killing the same animal that other people do eat to survive, what is the difference as long as we’re eating it and not wasting it? Why should it also matter what type of animal it is, can’t you all feel the same way in all situations for all animals, that sounds like hypocrisy to me.
