Managing risk with passwords

padlockWith real regret, I’ve decided to password-protect certain content on this website. I’m trying to be an adult now, and some of the old jotsheet stuff and writing is quite personal. Unfortunately, it’s a risk when people can type “tom sherman” into Google and learn all about me.

I’m a very open person. Ask me a question, and chances are I’ll answer it. But with adulthood and jobs and reputation, openness brings risk. So I’ve placed password restrictions on selected older jotsheet entries (October 2003 and earlier) and created a new private area on the current jotsheet where I can be completely open.

This isn’t about being elitist or replicating the kind of ridiculous snobbery that goes on at LJ with friends-only entries. This is about managing risk. I will keep the majority of content on this website publicly accessible.

If you know me and would like a login/password to access the private area or the older jotsheet entries, just e-mail me. I’ll grant access freely. I’m open. I’m just vulnerable now.

    Hi Tom,

You handled this topic of “restricted areas” very well. I like what I read. You say your trying to “be an adult now…” well, good job. You’re doing it.

I’m looking forward to seeing more of your site,

    Love,
    Erin

good idea! i always made journals friends only because i did them at work, and didn’t want my boss to read what i was up to if she checked what websites i had gone to…

it’s so irritating when people post long descriptive passages about their illicit activities and who exactly they were doing them with.

i’m bored. thank god the internet is endless.
