FU, ALF
mmkay, i’m on a bit of a political kick at the moment. got up this morning and found some interesting stuff, so i thought i’d share it with you.
i started poking around for some information on the Animal Liberation Front. for those of you haven’t heard of it, it’s essentially an organization that carries out acts of sabotage and terrorism “on behalf of” animals — all in the name of… well, i’m not sure, but some vague but very important responsibility to protect animal rights. we all have this responsibility despite the fact that most ALFers are atheists, so we as a race aren’t subject to any higher law. yeah, it’s kind of a tough jump to make, but i guess they do their best in their mission statement. (too bad they don’t do their best to edit the spelling errors on their junkyard of a Web site, but that’s another story.) anyway, one of the most interesting pages on the site is a list of animal rights supporters, many of whom i doubt would like to be associated with ALF. the list includes some unexpected names, such as Mark McGwire, Hulk Hogan, David Horowitz, Clive Barker, Richard Pryor, Larry Bird, and Mo Vaughn. if you read the fine print, it’s often unclear that these people are really “animal rights supporters” (especially in the ALF’s extremist sense), but it’s still thought-provoking.
perhaps the most interesting person listed in the above page was Emanuel Swedenborg, who wrote the doctrines of the New Church, the faith i subscribe to. evidently, a number of vegetarians cite Swedenborg as an important figure in Christian thinking on vegetarian eating, as evidenced from a Google search on “swedenborg vegetarian.” for example, this page on the “History of Vegetarianism” site actually quotes the Heavenly Doctrines. interestingly enough, they cut off the first quote from Arcana Coelestia 1002 two very important sentences early. take a look at the unabridged version AC 1002 and you’ll see what i mean.
in other meat-related news, it seems that close to Northwestern, the kids at New Trier (grr) have started a Carnivorous Club. bravo. probably the first time i’ve praised the Winnetka millionaire-teens for anything.
and lastly, Michael Newdow, the atheist who brought the suit against the Pledge of Allegiance, seems to own the same digital camera i do. yep.
The Man is keepin’ me down
first a speeding ticket, then a parking ticket?! what the hell is this, Evanston? and get this: I got it at 9:54am, and you’re allowed to park there at 10:00am. fuccckkkkkk that!
ah yes, i hate spending money. total yesterday? $206.36 (Alpine CDE-7870 CD deck + smart cables + wiring harness + tax) + $75.00 (bullshit speeding ticket) = $281.36. ouch.
