Life on an archaeological dig
hello there. i would like to relate to you my typical day while in field school.
1. 6:25 am: alarm rings. bed is warm. me no wanna leave. me wanna sleep and avoid digging. hit snooze.
2. 6:34 am: alarm rings for 2nd time. see above.
3. 6:43 am: alarm rings for 3rd time. i get out of bed, shower, and dress myself (yes, i learned how to do that recently).
4. 6:54 am: i cook an egg over-hard with salt and pepper. i toast a bagel in the oven (heh, no toaster). i make my lunch.
5. 7:05 am: punctual Jamie knocks on the door.
6. 7:06 am: after hassling Jamie for a entire minute, i open the door (ok, so that’s an exagerration).
7. 7:14 am: i finish eating, gather up all the crap i need for the day, and leave for Cahokia with Jamie and Santiago.

8. 7:36 am: arrive at Cahokia. unpack cars, carry crap over, put on suntan lotion and bug spray, erect tents, uncover test pits, etc.
9. 8:14 am: i begin thinking about lunch.
10. 8:53 am: i check my watch.
11. 9:41 am: i think about lunch some more.
12. 10:17 am: someone (NOT ME) gets excited about a particularly large sherd, piece of bone, or shell.
13. 10:18 am: i continue in my daydream/work state while the others look at the new object of interest.
14. 10:48 am: i think about lunch some more.
15. 11:07 am: i’m really getting hungry now.
16. 11:34 am: i daydream about Bryn Athyn.
17. 11:43 am: break for lunch. i have a wheat bagel + gulden’s mustard + schnuck’s ham + kraft swiss sandwich and 2 granola bars.
18. 12:21 pm: return to work. i linger behind a bit later than the others.
19. 12:38 pm: i begin to think about the end of the day.
20. 1:17 pm: someone (NOT ME) gets excited about a particularly large sherd, piece of bone, or shell.
21. 1:18 pm: i continue in my daydream/work state while the others look at the new object of interest.
22. 1:51 pm: i think about going back to the air conditioning in my apartment at SIU-E.
23. 2:56 pm: work is finally over. my trowel is missing again.

24: 3:16 pm: i arrive back at my apartment.
25. 3:17 pm: i wonder what to do with the rest of my day.
